Sign-ups for holiday assistance program in area begin Oct. 2
Those seeking assistance for the holidays for gifts and other expenses can sign up online to apply for the Salvation Army Central Virginia’s Christmas Assistance Program 2017 starting Monday, Oct. 2.
In order to apply, visit http://virginiasalvation army.org/richmondva/ programs/christmasassistance/ and sign up to make an appointment at the Salvation Army’s Christmas Warehouse, 6807 Midlothian Turnpike, in the former Kmart building. Appointments will begin on Monday, Oct. 16, and end Friday, Oct. 27.
Applicants cannot schedule an appointment or apply for assistance over the phone.
At the time of the appointment, applicants must provide photo identification, proof of current address, birth certificates for children up to age 14, and proof of household income, either from a current pay stub or a benefits award letter from various agencies, including social services, Section 8 housing, employment commission, Social Security or a private insurance company.
Those seeking clothing for children should know their current sizes. Children are not allowed at the Christmas Warehouse.
The holiday program is part of the annual Christmas Mother Fund, sponsored by the Richmond TimesDispatch. It helps families with food and gifts primarily through a $150,000 grant to the Salvation Army Central Virginia, as well as other organizations within the community through a partnership with The Community Foundation.
This year’s Richmond Christmas Mother is Richmond native Ann Parker Gottwald.
