Sign-ups for hol­i­day as­sis­tance pro­gram in area be­gin Oct. 2

Those seek­ing as­sis­tance for the hol­i­days for gifts and other ex­penses can sign up online to ap­ply for the Sal­va­tion Army Cen­tral Vir­ginia’s Christ­mas As­sis­tance Pro­gram 2017 start­ing Mon­day, Oct. 2.

In or­der to ap­ply, visit http://vir­gini­asal­va­tion­mondva/ pro­grams/christ­masas­sis­tance/ and sign up to make an ap­point­ment at the Sal­va­tion Army’s Christ­mas Ware­house, 6807 Mid­loth­ian Turn­pike, in the for­mer Kmart build­ing. Ap­point­ments will be­gin on Mon­day, Oct. 16, and end Fri­day, Oct. 27.

Ap­pli­cants can­not sched­ule an ap­point­ment or ap­ply for as­sis­tance over the phone.

At the time of the ap­point­ment, ap­pli­cants must pro­vide photo iden­ti­fi­ca­tion, proof of cur­rent ad­dress, birth cer­tifi­cates for chil­dren up to age 14, and proof of house­hold in­come, ei­ther from a cur­rent pay stub or a ben­e­fits award let­ter from var­i­ous agen­cies, in­clud­ing so­cial ser­vices, Sec­tion 8 hous­ing, em­ploy­ment com­mis­sion, So­cial Se­cu­rity or a pri­vate in­sur­ance com­pany.

Those seek­ing cloth­ing for chil­dren should know their cur­rent sizes. Chil­dren are not al­lowed at the Christ­mas Ware­house.

The hol­i­day pro­gram is part of the an­nual Christ­mas Mother Fund, spon­sored by the Rich­mond TimesDis­patch. It helps fam­i­lies with food and gifts pri­mar­ily through a $150,000 grant to the Sal­va­tion Army Cen­tral Vir­ginia, as well as other or­ga­ni­za­tions within the com­mu­nity through a part­ner­ship with The Com­mu­nity Foun­da­tion.
