Portsmouth firefighter charged in police standoff
PORTSMOUTH — A Virginia firefighter was arrested last week after a four-hour standoff with police.
Zachariah Ramsey Burd, 33, was arrested Tuesday and faces charges of attempted capital murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm, The Virginian-Pilot reported. Burd has been a Portsmouth firefighter for six years.
According to court documents, Burd made suicidal posts, and responding medics heard a gunshot from inside his house. Officers then set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to get Burd to speak with a negotiator. He refused to come out and became extremely irate.
Portsmouth police Detective Misty Holley said Burd eventually emerged and fired several shots in the direction of surrounding officers.
