Va. Community Capital is awarded $2.9 million
Virginia Community Capital Inc., a community development financial institution with offices in Richmond, has received two federal awards totaling $2.9 million from a Treasury Department fund. Of the total, $2 million is earmarked for healthy food projects, and the remainder is for economic development financing.
Virginia Community was one of 13 organizations to receive a $2 million award from the fund’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative. Money will be used to address food access issues in urban and rural Virginia.
“There are 1.7 million Virginians living in food deserts or low-income areas that lack grocery stores, and this award will help us continue to finance projects that give our fellow citizens access to healthy and fresh food options,” said James Wallace, community impact adviser at Virginia Community, which also has offices in Norfolk and Christiansburg.
