Va. Com­mu­nity Cap­i­tal is awarded $2.9 mil­lion

Vir­ginia Com­mu­nity Cap­i­tal Inc., a com­mu­nity de­vel­op­ment fi­nan­cial in­sti­tu­tion with of­fices in Rich­mond, has re­ceived two fed­eral awards to­tal­ing $2.9 mil­lion from a Trea­sury De­part­ment fund. Of the to­tal, $2 mil­lion is ear­marked for healthy food projects, and the re­main­der is for eco­nomic de­vel­op­ment fi­nanc­ing.

Vir­ginia Com­mu­nity was one of 13 or­ga­ni­za­tions to re­ceive a $2 mil­lion award from the fund’s Healthy Food Fi­nanc­ing Ini­tia­tive. Money will be used to ad­dress food ac­cess is­sues in ur­ban and ru­ral Vir­ginia.

“There are 1.7 mil­lion Vir­gini­ans liv­ing in food deserts or low-in­come ar­eas that lack gro­cery stores, and this award will help us con­tinue to fi­nance projects that give our fel­low cit­i­zens ac­cess to healthy and fresh food op­tions,” said James Wal­lace, com­mu­nity im­pact ad­viser at Vir­ginia Com­mu­nity, which also has of­fices in Nor­folk and Chris­tians­burg.
