Malcolm Bernard, who committed to Richmond’s basketball program last spring and intended to spend a season as a Spider after graduating from Florida A&M, landed in a good place.

Bernard, a 6-foot-6 wing, has started every game for No. 15 Xavier (13-3) and is averaging 6 points, four rebounds and 1.7 assists. Bernard, a resident of Miami, failed to gain admission to UR because of academic reasons, he said in July.

Bernard said he considered opportunities to join other A-10 programs that invited him, but he didn’t want to face UR because he had so much respect for coach Chris Mooney and the Spiders he got to know.
