Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 3.78 percent, which is slightly above last year’s average of 3.65 percent. The 15-yearmortgage stayed 3.08 percent.
Higher gas and housing costs boosted U.S. consumer prices 0.4 percent in August, the most in seven months. The increase suggests inflation could be picking up, but the figures may have been distorted by Hurricane Harvey. Consumer prices climbed 1.9 percent last month compared with a year earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday, up from an annual gain of 1.7 percent in August and the second straight increase. Excluding volatile energy and food costs, prices rose 0.2 percent in August and 1.7 percent from a year earlier.
Best Buy and Office Depot said they no longer will sell antivirus software by Kaspersky Labs, a Russian company that the U.S. government banned federal agencies from using. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security cited concerns about possible ties between unnamed Kaspersky officials and the Kremlin and Russian intelligence services.
Google faces a new lawsuit accusing it of gender-based pay discrimination. A lawyer representing three women who formerly worked at Google is seeking class action status for the suit. It follows a federal labor investigation that made preliminary findings of systemic pay discrimination at Google’s headquarters in California.
