3-year- old and 2 women from N.C. are killed in crash on I-95 that also injured four children
A 3-year-old and two women from North Carolina were killed Thursday and four children were injured when their minivan crashed on Interstate 95 in Sussex County.
A 2009 Dodge Caravan was traveling southbound on I-95 near mile marker 18 when it ran off the road and struck a tree head-on about 6 a.m., according to Virginia State Police.
The other children in the vehicle — a 3-yearold, an 8-year-old and two 12-year-olds — were taken to VCU Medical Center.
One of the 12-yearolds, a boy, suffered lifethreatening injuries and was flown to the hospital. The other children had injuries that were not life-threatening.
Olga Mondragon Briones, 48, was driving. She was killed, along with Elizabeth Sanchez, 32, and Nelson Flores, 3. All died upon impact, state police said.
The state police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation, which is ongoing.
