McGRAW, Walter John,
better known as "Wally," died on September 13, 2017. Wally was born in Richmond Hill, New York, on May 4, 1928. He was the son of the late Walter and Veronica McGraw. Wally became an avid Southerner and lived in Richmond for 70 years. He attended Xavier Military Academy, University of Richmond and Washington and Lee School of Law. He practiced law for over 50 years and retired from the firm Williams Mullen. He served on 11 different corporate and bank boards, the Virginia Bar Association, as well as several volunteer organizations. He served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University and was elected Vice Rector and Rector. He was also a member of numerous social clubs including The Commonwealth Club, the Country Club of Virginia and the Richmond Cotillion. Many joyous years were spent on the Corrotoman River where he became an active member of the community. Wally’s years in the U.S. Navy were among his happiest. He loved his Navy service, and after 30 years, he retired with the rank of Rear Admiral. While serving, his proudest time was with the UDT, which is now referred to as the Navy Seals. Wally is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maryglyn; son, Walter J. McGraw Jr., wife, Becky, granddaughters, Liza and Charlotte; daughter, Martha McKaughn, husband, Robert, granddaughters, Katie and Carter. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald and wife, Irene; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p. m., Friday, September 15, at Bliley’s- Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A memorial service will be held 11 a. m. Monday, September 18, at the Commons at Westminster Canterbury. A private burial will be held in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Westminster Canterbury Foundation, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227 or the Richmond Navy League at P.O. Box 11201, Richmond, Va. 23230.
