bet­ter known as "Wally," died on Septem­ber 13, 2017. Wally was born in Rich­mond Hill, New York, on May 4, 1928. He was the son of the late Wal­ter and Veron­ica McGraw. Wally be­came an avid South­erner and lived in Rich­mond for 70 years. He at­tended Xavier Mil­i­tary Acad­emy, Univer­sity of Rich­mond and Wash­ing­ton and Lee School of Law. He prac­ticed law for over 50 years and re­tired from the firm Williams Mullen. He served on 11 dif­fer­ent cor­po­rate and bank boards, the Vir­ginia Bar As­so­ci­a­tion, as well as sev­eral vol­un­teer or­ga­ni­za­tions. He served on the Board of Vis­i­tors at James Madi­son Univer­sity and was elected Vice Rec­tor and Rec­tor. He was also a mem­ber of nu­mer­ous so­cial clubs in­clud­ing The Com­mon­wealth Club, the Coun­try Club of Vir­ginia and the Rich­mond Cotil­lion. Many joy­ous years were spent on the Cor­ro­toman River where he be­came an ac­tive mem­ber of the com­mu­nity. Wally’s years in the U.S. Navy were among his hap­pi­est. He loved his Navy ser­vice, and af­ter 30 years, he re­tired with the rank of Rear Ad­mi­ral. While serv­ing, his proud­est time was with the UDT, which is now re­ferred to as the Navy Seals. Wally is sur­vived by his wife of 64 years, Maryg­lyn; son, Wal­ter J. McGraw Jr., wife, Becky, grand­daugh­ters, Liza and Char­lotte; daugh­ter, Martha McKaughn, hus­band, Robert, grand­daugh­ters, Katie and Carter. He is also sur­vived by his brother, Ger­ald and wife, Irene; as well as sev­eral nieces and neph­ews. The fam­ily will re­ceive friends 6 to 8 p. m., Fri­day, Septem­ber 15, at Bliley’s- Cen­tral, 3801 Au­gusta Ave. A memo­rial ser­vice will be held 11 a. m. Mon­day, Septem­ber 18, at the Com­mons at West­min­ster Can­ter­bury. A pri­vate burial will be held in Hol­ly­wood Ceme­tery. In lieu of flow­ers, memo­ri­als may be made to the West­min­ster Can­ter­bury Foun­da­tion, 1600 West­brook Ave., Rich­mond, Va. 23227 or the Rich­mond Navy League at P.O. Box 11201, Rich­mond, Va. 23230.
