Team effort ends with arrest of vehicle theft suspect on 99

Ripon Bulletin - - Local - By GLENN KAHL

What was said to be a great effort of team work, Ripon Police officers arrested a suspected auto thief shortly before noon on Thursday with the help of a community service officer, the FBI and the Delta Auto Theft Task Force. The arrest was made on northbound Highway 99 near Yosemite Avenue.

The stolen pickup truck was spotted by Community Services Officer Liz Forks at the Angle Petroleum gas station in the 300 block of East Main Street in Ripon adjacent to the Highway 99 northbound off ramp – a station that had been the victim of an armed robbery in July.

Forks radioed her dispatcher with the vehicle description and license plate number. Ripon dispatchers broadcast information that the vehicle had been entered into the system by the San Jose Police Department as having been stolen several days earlier in that city.

The patrolmen on the city streets began combing the area searching for the vehicle when School Resource Officer Trevor McGinnis responded in the department’s fully-marked Ford Mustang Interceptor. McGinnis spotted the stolen vehicle on northbound Highway 99 and caught up with the suspect as he was approaching Yosemite Avenue in Manteca.

A felony car stop saw the suspect taken out of his vehicle at gunpoint and taken into custody without incident. The stop was assisted by the FBI and the Delta Regional Auto Theft Task Force who both happened to be in the area.

Jesus Sanchez-Avila, 22, of Winton was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges that included auto theft and possession of stolen property. He is scheduled to appear in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
