Pop-Culture Convention Planned At Modesto Centre Plaza In July
The group of comic and pop-culture loving geeks who hosted the NorCal Cosies Red Carpet Cosplay Awards, and the first National Cosplay Day Celebration, is now planning an ‘all things geekery’ convention. The festivities are scheduled for July 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
Tickets are available online at www.modestocon. bpt.me and local comic and games shops around the region.
The city of Modesto has earned its fame as the home of geek culture icons such as George Lucas (known for “American Graffiti” and the “Star Wars” saga) and “Marvel’s Avengers” star Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), as well as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” star James Marsters (Spike). The city of Modesto is the first city to officially celebrate “May the 4th be with you” as an city holiday, every May 4th in honor of Yoda’s epic line, “May the Force be with you.”
The cosplay, anime, comic, and all-around geek culture is ripe in Modesto. It grows, organizers said, as fervently as the region’s almonds. Mod-Con hopes to further the culture of geekery, to educate the public in all aspects of geekery, to provide fun, safe events for families to attend, to expand downtown business, and to support local business. This is a family-friendly event, at only $4 a ticket in advance, $5 at the door, you can afford to bring the whole family.
Mod-Con has already announced several panels such as “Cosplay 101”, “Self-Image In Comics” led by Chunky Girl Comics, “L.A.R.P. 101”, “Starting a Comic Series”, and more. There will be a costume contest as well as The Geek Fashion Show.
Special guests will include Doug Jones, long remembered for his work as The Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer” and Sam Jones, best known for his role as Flash Gordon. Modesto Con will also have members from several fan groups in full costume.
There will be vendors selling everything from comic books, gaming cards to science fiction, horror and classic toys.
Get your tickets at Bonanza Books, Battleground Games and Banzai Cards and Comics in Modesto, Gamer’s Path in Manteca, Red Sky Comics in Merced, Comic Plus in Los Banos and Ziggy’s Games in Turlock.
