Set for Aug. 4-5 at the Stock­ton Bud­dhist Church

STOCK­TON — Stock­ton Bud­dhist Church presents its an­nual Bon Odori and Cul­tural Bazaar, Satur­day, Aug. 4, and Sun­day, Aug. 5, at the Church grounds, lo­cated at 2820 Shimizu Drive in Stock­ton.

The event be­gins at 11 a.m. for both days kick­ing off on Satur­day with the tra­di­tional Taiko per­for­mance. The two- day cel­e­bra­tion fea­tures a va­ri­ety of cul­tural demon­stra­tions, arts and food. The pub­lic is in­vited to come out to par­tic­i­pate, eat and en­joy the an­nual tra­di­tion.

In­side en­ter­tain­ment in­cludes tra­di­tional dance and mu­sic. Other en­ter­tain­ment in­cludes per­for­mances by Stock­ton Bukkyo Taiko, Hawai­ian en­ter­tain­ment by the Ukulele Strum­mers of Stock­ton. Live mu­sic will be fea­tured both days pro­vided by The Phillip Baily band and Elima on Sun­day.

Mar­tial arts demon­stra­tions by the lo­cal or­ga­ni­za­tions in­clud­ing the Stock­ton Kendo club will take place in the Church So­cial Hall while tra­di­tional tea cer­e­mony and tours of the tem­ple. There will also be Ja­panese arts and crafts on dis­play as well as for sale.

The Bon Odori Dance, is the high­light of open­ing Satur­day begin­ning at 7 p.m. Bon Odori, is the Bud­dhist event that marks a re­mem­brance of one’s an­ces­tors. Mem­bers of the Church cel­e­brate in tra­di­tional Ja­panese cos­tume while per­form­ing tra­di­tional cel­e­bra­tion dances in­clud­ing the use of fans, cas­tanets as they cel­e­brate re­mem­brance of an­ces­tors and loved ones who have left.

Food choices in the So­cial Hall abound. This in­cludes our award win­ning teriyaki chicken along with tra­di­tional sushi, udon, curry rice and our fab­u­lous dessert bar. Out­side food booths will of­fer tasty de­lights in­clud­ing tem­pura, kushiyaki, BBQ oys­ters and Asia Dogs as well ham­burg­ers and fresh corn on the cob. New this year will be a beer gar­den and bev­er­age sta­tions will be on hand.

There will be games fea­tured on both days with a va­ri­ety of kids’ games, Ne­vada club and Bingo.
