Limit time outside for children and animals, Floyd County’s emergency management director cautions.

The wind chill could make the temperature feel like 10 degrees, but Rome is still expected to be one of the warmest areas in Northwest Georgia today.

The actual temperature may get as high as 35 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, but it could drop as low as 22 degrees tonight and is expected to remain frigid into Wednesday.

A cold air mass coming from the west could possibly bring snow today, said Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Tim Herington.

However, he added that it’s difficult to predict because of the county’s location.

“If the storm doesn’t shift directions, we will only have a small chance of snow flurries, but if it shifts more southwest we could get over an inch of snow,” Herrington said.

But Herrington said Monday evening that snow is not his biggest concern.

He said the low temperatures and wind chill factor could have more of an impact on the community.

“It’s time to bring your pets inside and wear lots of layers in the morning,” Herrington said.

Animals such as livestock that are always kept outside should have blankets put on them or be moved into a barn or other structure if one is available, Herrington said.

He also said parents should try to limit the amount of time kids are standing outside waiting for the bus in the cold.

“If it’s possible, wait until the school bus is right by your house before you send your child outside,” he said.

Herrington said it is better to prepare for the worst rather than not prepare at all.
