Pauline Smith was born on February 6, 1926 and died April 24, 2017 at 91 yrs old. She was born in Harlan County, Cumberland, Kentucky. Her parents were Issac Clinton Smith and Ethel Hogg. She had a rough childhood, raised in an orphanage. Her mother, Ethel, left the family when Pauline was 3 years old. Her Dad passed in a coal mine accident when Pauline was 8 years old. She became a nurse at 27 years old after training at Georgia Baptist Nursing School in 1953 and was voted most likely to succeed in her graduation class. She married K. C. Pilgrim at 28 years old, and on February 26, 1954 gave birth to 5 children and was a wonderful mother. The family lived in Florida, Chattanoog­a, Tennessee, and then Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Palm Springs, California in the 1980s. She was a wonderful friend to many people and always had a nature of helping others. She was very loved by all the people who knew her. She was a strong Christian who loved to read her Bible, say her prayers, and quote scriptures a lot. She had glioblasto­ma brain cancer and passed around 6 months after her diagnosis. Her hobbies were playing the piano, knitting, sewing, riding her bicycle, and visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include her children, Teresa K. Pilgrim, Paul W. Pilgrim, C. Dianne Pilgrim, S. Joanne Pilgrim, and John P. Pilgrim; sister Geraldine Gatewood. Five grandchild­ren, nieces and nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28 at the Parnick Jennings Sr.’s Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Avenue, Rome with the Reverend Herman Stamey officiatin­g. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Cedartown. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour.
