Michigan man dies after struggling with arresting officers

LEE TOWNSHIP » State police are investigating the death of a southwestern Michigan man who stopped breathing and died following a struggle with officers trying to take him into custody. Nathan Strample, 40, of Pullman died following Wednesday’s incident in the unincorporated Allegan County community, Michigan State Police said. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

State police said Strample put up “considerable resistance” when he struggled with a state trooper and an Allegan County sheriff’s deputy who were trying to arrest him Wednesday morning after being called to a home in Lee Township on a report of a domestic disturbance. Police did not immediately describe the nature of that struggle or what measures the trooper and deputy used to try to subdue Strample, but said that at some point they noticed Strample wasn’t breathing.

The officers and EMTs tried to revive him, but Strample died at the scene. State police said that “special investigations sections” from two state police districts, along with the state police laboratory and reconstruction unit, are investigating the circumstances of Strample’s death.
