Police officer rescues man, 93, who drove into frigid pond

A 93-year- old man who reportedly drove into a pond early Sunday morning was rescued by a West Bloomfield police officer who braved shoulder- deep, frigid water to bring him to safety.

West Bloomfield’s Deputy Police Chief Curt Lawson said the incident happened at 1:30 a.m. Nov. 22 when the man drove his car into a pond off of Woodingham Road, near 14 Mile and Haggerty roads. Police were contacted by a neighbor who heard the man begging for help, Lawson said.

Officer Alex Lang arrived on the scene to find the car submerged up to the bottom of its windows. He went into the water, helped the man from his car and carried him back to shore. The man was then turned over paramedics at the scene. where medical personnel were waiting.

Lawson said the man had been in the vehicle for approximat­ely one hour prior to being saved.

Police did not provide further details on the man’s condition.
