Deck collapse: A concrete slab at a parking deck under construction in Atlanta collapsed Saturday — the second collapse at the site in as many days — sending a worker trying to shore up the structure plunging several stories below, authorities said. The man suffered leg injuries, Atlanta fire spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said. The worker was taken to a hospital for treatment, and was alert and conscious, authorities said. “He was on that concrete and rode it down as it collapsed,” Stafford said. Authorities have stopped all work at the construction site. On Friday, six workers were hurt in the initial collapse.

Potent storm: Tropical Storm Sally formed Saturday off southern Florida as it headed toward the Gulf of Mexico. Sally was expected to become a hurricane by late Monday that could threaten a wide swath of the Gulf Coast early in the week. It becomes the earliest 18th named storm in a busy tropical season, beating Stan, which formed on Oct. 2, 2006. Meteorologists warned of an increasing risk of lifethreatening storm surge and dangerous hurricaneforce winds from southeastern Louisiana to the Alabama coast.

Historic building burns: A fire early Saturday devastated an famous building prized for its architectural beauty and history in South Carolina’s capital of Columbia. Crews battled the blaze at the Dr. James Woods Babcock Building, part of a shuttered former mental health asylum that was slated to be converted into a luxury housing development. A cause had not been determined for the fire, which Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said engulfed all three floors of the structure. On the National Register of Historic Places, what was once known as the Babcock Building and its famous raised cupola and 12sided dome had been a notable part of Columbia’s downtown skyline since 1857.

Trespassing citations: Nine protesters have been issued trespassing summonses for marching onto a private St. Louis street in June, a demonstration that prompted a couple to emerge from their home with guns to confront the demonstrators. Mark and Patricia McCloskey were both charged in July with unlawful use of a weapon in a polarizing case that landed them a spot at the Republican National Convention last month. Police spokeswoman Evita Caldwell confirmed Friday that nine protesters have been issued summonses but said the St. Louis City Counselor’s office is still deciding whether to issue charges on the citations. The Rev. Darryl Gray, who led the protest, called the citations an attempt to intimidate peaceful protesters.

Deadly crash: A small plane crashed and burned in a parking lot near Van Nuys Airport on Friday, killing two people on board while barely missing parked cars in a narrow space between industrial buildings. The plane went down just west of the airport, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. It didn’t hit any buildings and no one on the ground was hurt. But the plane damaged three cars. The singleengine Navion B was heading to Santa Ynez Airport in Santa Barbara County when it went down, said Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration.
