Broncos hold off San Diego
Jared Brownridge scored 20 points, two coming on the gamewinning layup with 1:07 left, and Santa Clara grabbed a 59-57 victory at San Diego on Thursday night.
The game was backand-forth over the final 8½ minutes. Neither team led by more than three points in that stretch.
Brownridge’s bucket accounted for the only points of the final 2½ minutes.
On the ensuing possession, San Diego’s Brett Bailey missed two foul shots. Moments later, Bailey blocked Brownridge’s shot, giving the Toreros (8-9, 1-4) a chance to tie or win the game.
Olin Carter III was off the mark on a contested three-point try. Bailey grabbed the rebound and flipped up a shot that went in, but was just after the buzzer.
KJ Feagin added 19 points for the Broncos (9-9, 3-2).
BYU 85, USF 75:
Eric Mika scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the host Cougars (13-5, 4-1) handed the Dons their fourth straight loss.
Remu Raitanen, a 6foot-9 freshman from Helsinki, scored a personal-high 16 points for the Dons (11-7, 1-4). Seven-foot freshman center Jimbo Lull also had a personal best with 12 points.
Raitanen went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, but his teammates were 4for-25 from long distance.
USF 70, BYU 63: Anna Seilund had 19 points to lead the Dons (9-7, 3-2) over the Cougars (9-7, 3-2) on the Hilltop. BYU’s Kalani Purcell had a game-high 19 rebounds. St. Mary’s 92, Portland 76: At McKeon Pavilion, Carly Turner and Stella Beck each scored 19 points as the Gaels (8-8, 3-2) took care of the Pilots (3-13, 1-4). San Diego 57, Santa Clara 56: Down by three with 1.4 seconds left, the host Broncos (8-8, 3-2) inbounded the ball to Lori Parkinson. She intended to shoot what would have been a tying three-pointer, but her foot was on the arc, so the basket left the Toreros (8-7, 2-3) one point in front. Parkinson had 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Chronicle staff writer Steve Kroner contributed to this report.
