The new Los Angeles Rams coach — the youngest head coach in mod­ern NFL his­tory — gave strong back­ing to quar­ter­back Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick out of Cal who took a beat­ing dur­ing his win­less rookie sea­son un­der Jeff Fisher. “This is a guy we be­lieve in,” said McVay, 30, who will call plays for the Rams’ of­fense. “We’re en­cour­aged and ex­cited about de­vel­op­ing him.” Goff shared the en­thu­si­asm af­ter talk­ing ex­ten­sively with McVay, whose grand­fa­ther John McVay was a long­time 49ers ex­ec­u­tive, ear­lier in the week. “Com­ing out of my meet­ing, I felt like it was a guy that I would love to play for, and hope­fully play a long time for,” Goff said. “I ex­pect him to bring out the best in me.”

Pep Hamil­ton

The for­mer Stan­ford and 49ers of­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor is re­unit­ing with Jim Har­baugh at Michi­gan as the Wolver­ines’ new as­sis­tant coach and pass­ing game co­or­di­na­tor. Hamil­ton said it’s an “honor and priv­i­lege to be part of one of the most sto­ried pro­grams in col­lege foot­ball his­tory.” Hamil­ton was an as­so­ciate head coach on of­fense for the Cleve­land Browns last sea­son.
