The new Los Angeles Rams coach — the youngest head coach in modern NFL history — gave strong backing to quarterback Jared Goff, the No. 1 pick out of Cal who took a beating during his winless rookie season under Jeff Fisher. “This is a guy we believe in,” said McVay, 30, who will call plays for the Rams’ offense. “We’re encouraged and excited about developing him.” Goff shared the enthusiasm after talking extensively with McVay, whose grandfather John McVay was a longtime 49ers executive, earlier in the week. “Coming out of my meeting, I felt like it was a guy that I would love to play for, and hopefully play a long time for,” Goff said. “I expect him to bring out the best in me.”
The former Stanford and 49ers offensive coordinator is reuniting with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan as the Wolverines’ new assistant coach and passing game coordinator. Hamilton said it’s an “honor and privilege to be part of one of the most storied programs in college football history.” Hamilton was an associate head coach on offense for the Cleveland Browns last season.
