For peo­ple with pre-ex­ist­ing res­pi­ra­tory con­di­tions, smoke in­hala­tion can cause a flareup of symp­toms that may not re­spond well to nor­mal med­i­ca­tion and other ther­apy.

Oth­er­wise healthy peo­ple can suf­fer eye, nose and throat ir­ri­ta­tion, or de­velop a cough, headache or over­all fa­tigue.

chil­dren may be es­pe­cially at risk be­cause their lungs are still de­vel­op­ing.
