Health hazards of coal

San Francisco Chronicle Late Edition - - OPINION - Vernon Greene, Oakland

Regarding “A sooty setback” (Editorial, May 17): As a senior citizen who has COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), I am firmly against coal trains coming into and coal shipments going out of the Port of Oakland. Coal dust is, indeed, a health hazard, and it will make it harder for both older and younger people to breathe. Isn’t our state committed to combatting climate change and protecting the environment for future generations? The city of Oakland should appeal the federal judge’s ruling that would permit these hazardous coal shipments.
