WHAT TO WATCH FOR

San Francisco Chronicle Late Edition - - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - — Rusty Simmons

Cal appears to have settled on quarterback Brandon McIlwain, a dual-threat sophomore transfer from South Carolina. Two weeks ago, he became the first Bears quarterback to run for at least 100 yards in a game since Joe Kapp in 1958, and last week he posted career-best passing numbers (32-for-43 for 315 yards). But McIlwain has also committed seven turnovers — four of which have been returned for touchdowns.

UCLA, 0-5 for the first time since the 1943 squad lost its first seven games, has the fifth-youngest team in the nation (71.7 percent of its players are underclassmen). Of the 56 players who saw action last week against Washington, 20 are freshmen, including quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

The Bruins’ first five opponents went into this weekend with a combined record of 25-3, and the tough schedule has taken a toll on UCLA’s stats. The Bruins are being outscored by an average of 18 points per game, are last in the conference in total offense (334.0 yards per game) and rank 11th in total defense (429.6 yards per game).
