Padres’ Clevinger has elbow sprain

San Diego pitcher Mike Clevinger, who left a start Wednesday after one inning, on Thursday was diagnosed with a sprained right elbow.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported that the team won’t know until Sunday at the earliest whether Clevinger will be able to resume throwing this season.

Clevinger, acquired from Cleveland on Aug. 31 as part of a nineplayer trade, is 21 with a 2.84

ERA in four starts with the Padres.

Clevinger was 11 with a 3.18 ERA in four starts for Cleveland before being placed on the restricted list Aug. 11 for violating coronaviru­s protocols by leaving the team hotel in Chicago. More injuries: Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulo­s told MLB Network Radio that pitcher Max Fried, who hurt his ankle Wednesday, will be ready for the playoffs . ... St. Louis pitcher Carlos Martinez was placed on the injured list because of an oblique strain . ... The list of players landing on the IL also includes Mets outfielder Michael Conforto (hamstring) and Miami pitcher Josh A. Smith (finger). It’s a deal: Turner Sports agreed with Major League Baseball on a sevenyear extension of its broadcast rights through the 2028 season.

The agreement, which will take effect in 2022, includes a Tuesday night game as well as additional postseason games. Briefly: Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon, 36, said in a Zoom news conference that he will retire after this season. Gordon, a threetime AllStar and seventime Gold Glove winner, has spent his entire 14year career with the Royals . ... Incoming Mets majority owner Steve Cohen told reporters that he plans to hire former A’s and Mets GM Sandy Alderson as team president.
