IndyCar to finish at Sonoma again

San Francisco Chronicle - - SCOREBOARD -

The Grand Prix of Sonoma will again have a chance to decide the IndyCar Series champion as the circuit’s final stop, but the run-up to Sonoma will have a new twist: Portland.

IndyCar released its 2018 schedule, with St. Petersburg, Fla., hosting the opener of the 17-race season on March 11 and Sonoma Raceway hosting the finale on Sept. 16. The Indianapolis 500 is May 27.

Portland International Raceway’s 1.967-mile permanent road course will be the site of the penultimate race on Sept. 2. It will be IndyCar’s first trip to the Oregon track since races were held from 1984-2007 under CART and Champ Car sanction.

Portland replaces Watkins Glen, N.Y., on the schedule.

Rafael Nadal won his 14th consecutive match to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, beating Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-1. Roger Federer, seeded second to Nadal, defeated Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-2.

The WTA says Johanna Konta (left foot injury) has withdrawn from the Kremlin Cup next week, meaning Caroline Garcia has secured the eighth and last berth in the WTA finals.
