Ama­zon plans a series based on “The Lord of the

Rings ” by J.R.R. Tolkien. The show, avail­able through its Prime ser­vice, will ex­plore story lines that take place be­fore the time of “The Fel­low­ship of the Rings.” It will be pro­duced by Ama­zon Stu­dios in co­op­er­a­tion with the Tolkien Es­tate

and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema. The mul­ti­sea­son deal in­cludes a po­ten­tial spin-off series as well, said Ama­zon, which paid a re­ported $250 mil­lion for the rights. The bigscreen ver­sion of the tril­ogy earned nearly $6 bil­lion world­wide, and the final en­try, “Re­turn of the King,” won the 2003 best pic­ture Os­car. No cast or re­lease date has been an­nounced.
