Robert Lane Chapman
October 24, 1933 - December 29, 2017
Robert (Bob) Chapman passed away on December 29, 2017 at the age of 84 with his wife and children by his side. He was born on October 24, 1933 to William Edgar Chapman, and Alice Bertha Moerner in London, England. Bob spent the early years of his life in Europe, living in England and Spain, due to his father’s work as an American Consul. When the family returned to the United States, they settled in Norman, OK. Bob grew up in Norman and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics. After graduation, he served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957, completing his active duty as a Lieutenant. Following active duty, he continued his service in the Navy Reserve for 20 years. While serving in the Navy, Bob met Norma Naegle and they married on December 28, 1957. They had five children.
Upon completing his active duty in the Navy, Bob then began his engineering career at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, followed by aerospace engineering roles at both Aero Jet International, and EG&G where he contributed to the Apollo space missions. He left EG&G to launch VIDA Medical Systems, Inc. where he made significant contributions to health care through patented technology which he invented. He also led companies in the electronics and medical device industry in CEO roles at Silver Instruments, Inc., and Scanis, Inc. a company that pioneered computer-aided medical imaging for early disease detection.
Bob married Margaret (Peggy) Ferris on October 3, 1987, and together they shared 36 years of loving companionship, travel, and adventure. Bob is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Ferris, children Arlen Chapman, Kathleen Chapman Bystrom, Merilyn Chapman, Darel Chapman, Elu Chapman (daughter-inlaw), Kyle Chapman, and Dana Chapman (daughterin-law), grandchildren Brian Bystrom, Darren Bystrom, Elaine Albertson, Cameron Albertson, Sam Albertson, Blade Chapman, Sean Chapman, Thomas Chapman, and Carter Chapman, great grandchildren Hayden, Harper, Kathleen, and Charlotte Bystrom.
Bob will be remembered as a Navy veteran, inventor, business leader, and adventurer with a zest for life, and a passion for making a difference through the application of technology.
A celebration of life and memorial services will be held on January 18th, 2018 at 11:00am at Chapel of the Highlands, 194 Millwood Dr., Millbrae, CA, with interment at 12:30pm at St. John’s Cemetery, 910 Oregon Avenue, San Mateo, CA. A reception will follow.
