Robert (Bob) Chap­man passed away on De­cem­ber 29, 2017 at the age of 84 with his wife and chil­dren by his side. He was born on Oc­to­ber 24, 1933 to Wil­liam Edgar Chap­man, and Alice Bertha Mo­erner in Lon­don, Eng­land. Bob spent the early years of his life in Europe, liv­ing in Eng­land and Spain, due to his father’s work as an Amer­i­can Con­sul. When the fam­ily re­turned to the United States, they set­tled in Norman, OK. Bob grew up in Norman and grad­u­ated from the Uni­ver­sity of Ok­la­homa with a B.S. de­gree in En­gi­neer­ing Physics. Af­ter grad­u­a­tion, he served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957, com­plet­ing his ac­tive duty as a Lieu­tenant. Fol­low­ing ac­tive duty, he con­tin­ued his ser­vice in the Navy Re­serve for 20 years. While serv­ing in the Navy, Bob met Norma Nae­gle and they mar­ried on De­cem­ber 28, 1957. They had five chil­dren.

Upon com­plet­ing his ac­tive duty in the Navy, Bob then be­gan his en­gi­neer­ing ca­reer at the Lawrence Liver­more Na­tional Lab­o­ra­tory, fol­lowed by aerospace en­gi­neer­ing roles at both Aero Jet In­ter­na­tional, and EG&G where he contributed to the Apollo space mis­sions. He left EG&G to launch VIDA Med­i­cal Sys­tems, Inc. where he made sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions to health care through patented tech­nol­ogy which he in­vented. He also led com­pa­nies in the elec­tron­ics and med­i­cal de­vice in­dus­try in CEO roles at Sil­ver In­stru­ments, Inc., and Sca­nis, Inc. a com­pany that pi­o­neered com­puter-aided med­i­cal imag­ing for early dis­ease de­tec­tion.

Bob mar­ried Mar­garet (Peggy) Fer­ris on Oc­to­ber 3, 1987, and to­gether they shared 36 years of lov­ing com­pan­ion­ship, travel, and ad­ven­ture. Bob is sur­vived by his wife Mar­garet (Peggy) Fer­ris, chil­dren Arlen Chap­man, Kath­leen Chap­man Bys­trom, Mer­i­lyn Chap­man, Darel Chap­man, Elu Chap­man (daugh­ter-in­law), Kyle Chap­man, and Dana Chap­man (daugh­terin-law), grand­chil­dren Brian Bys­trom, Dar­ren Bys­trom, Elaine Al­bert­son, Cameron Al­bert­son, Sam Al­bert­son, Blade Chap­man, Sean Chap­man, Thomas Chap­man, and Carter Chap­man, great grand­chil­dren Hay­den, Harper, Kath­leen, and Charlotte Bys­trom.

Bob will be re­mem­bered as a Navy vet­eran, in­ven­tor, busi­ness leader, and ad­ven­turer with a zest for life, and a pas­sion for mak­ing a dif­fer­ence through the ap­pli­ca­tion of tech­nol­ogy.

A cel­e­bra­tion of life and memo­rial ser­vices will be held on Jan­uary 18th, 2018 at 11:00am at Chapel of the High­lands, 194 Mill­wood Dr., Mill­brae, CA, with in­ter­ment at 12:30pm at St. John’s Ceme­tery, 910 Ore­gon Av­enue, San Ma­teo, CA. A re­cep­tion will fol­low.
