Tax increase will fund needed services
Santa Fe County services, as a rule, depend on two funding sources: property taxes and gross receipts taxes. In the long run, providing behavioral health services will save the county money, in lower jail costs and other ways of dealing with the mentally ill and the addicted that are less humane and less effective.
In our present federal climate, the county cannot afford not to fund these services. That extra tax is needed. Keeping gross receipts taxes away from food makes the tax less regressive. I favor a non-regressive income tax that would not harm our older citizens who cannot afford higher property taxes, but in the absence of support for that, we must tax somehow.
