Dozen Domenicis needed in Senate

Santa Fe New Mexican - - OPINIONS -

I am pretty much what a Southerner would call a “yellow-dog Democrat,” which is a person who would rather vote for a yellow dog than a Republican, but over many years, I worked closely with Pete Domenici on a number of issues — the Rio Grande bosque and the Valles Caldera at the top of the list — and, even when I disagreed with his positions, I respected him enormously and liked him. He told you what he thought with no fuss or hedging, and if he said he would do something, it was as good as done. He was pragmatic and down-to-earth, and I will miss him. If we could trade out the McConnells, Cruzes and Inhofes of today’s Congress for a dozen or so Domenicis, we might have a functional Senate and maybe a start toward a rational GOP.
