One of the most distinctive sights in India’s Kerala state is the or “Chinese nets.” These wood-and-rope cranes stand in rows along the coast, their curved arms perfectly balanced to dip in and out of the ocean. The complex design might have been introduced to India centuries ago by Ming Dynasty mariner Zheng He, leader of China’s legendary treasure fleet. Since then, these elegant contraptions have come to symbolize Cochin and the tropical Malabar Coast.
