Ethan Mayfield, an Eagle Scout candidate, helped organize an Eagle Scout project that will be used for many years by the students of Salem Junior High School. Ethan organized the construction of two long jump pits with a runway in between. The runway is topped with a rubber track surface.

Discussion of the project began almost a year ago, the initial ground breaking occurred last August and the dedication ceremony was held Dec. 2, 2014. Some track and field members at Salem Junior High ran and jumped into the pits for the first time.

The track and field coaching staff, school administration and entire Salem community are thankful to Ethan because he worked so hard. He diligently sought out talented members of our community to excavate the area, remove sod and form, pour and finish concrete. He also solicited many donations for gravel, concrete and sand.

His project will benefit thousands of student athletes who will participate in track and field at Salem Junior High. This addition to the track and field facility at SaJHS will help accommodate more student athletes. Last year SaJHS had 165 members on its track and field team.
