Learn­ing about ge­neal­ogy at Fam­ily Dis­cov­ery Day planned in Payson


The Payson Fam­ily His­tory Cen­ter will spon­sor Payson’s first Fam­ily Dis­cov­ery Day on Satur­day, Sept. 17, at the Mount Nebo Stake Cen­ter, 608 W. 1400 South. Those at­tend­ing will learn how to be­gin or en­hance their fam­ily his­tory re­search from ex­pe­ri­enced ex­perts and pre­sen­ters. The day will be­gin at 9 a.m. with key- note speak­ers Pres­i­dent Wil­liam Sonne and his wife Sis­ter El­iz­a­beth Sonne, tem- ple pres­i­dent and ma­tron of the Payson Tem­ple. Dur­ing the next three hours, nine class- es will be of­fered pro­vid­ing var­i­ous levels of fam­ily his­tory in­struc­tion for adults and youth. At­ten­dees will be able to choose three classes. There is no need to sign up for the classes; they will be of­fered on a first come, first served ba­sis, but there should be plenty of room for all who at- tend. Ad­vance reg­is­tra­tion is not re­quired, but it is rec­om­mended so an ap­prox­i­mate num­ber of those at­tend­ing can be ob­tained. Fam­ily Dis­cov- ery Day will pro- vide a unique op- por­tu­nity to hear from fam­ily his­tory ex­perts in­clud­ing Le­land Moon, who de­vel­oped the Sand Box and other Fam- ily Tree cur­ricu­lum that Fam­il­y­Search uses on its web­site. He will be teach­ing “Us­ing the Fam­ily Tree Apps” and “Us­ing Photo, Doc­u­ments, Sto­ries and Au­dio.” Bar­bara Moon will teach “Merg­ing and Cor­rect­ing Re­la­tion­ships” and “Clear­ing Names for Tem­ple Or­di­nances.” Robert Kehrer, a Root­sTech pre­sen­ter, will teach about Record Hints in Fam­ily- Search. Laryn Brown will talk about An- ces­try.com. Van Ce­laya will teach “Fast, Ac­cu­rate Re­search,” Bret Petersen will dis­cuss cen­sus records and Rose Ny­man and Susan Schirmer will of­fer “Teach­ing Your Fam­ily Their Fam­ily His­tory” with ideas for games and projects. Amy Sta­heli and Kim­berly Marvin, youth from the Payson South Stake, will be teach­ing a class about fam­ily his­tory for youth. We have a spe­cial speaker, Bran­don Baird from Fam­ily Search, who will be pre­pared to teach fam­ily his­tory in var­i­ous sub­jects for all Span­ish-speak­ing at­tend- ees that want to start to learn more about fam­ily his­tory. There will also be fam­ily his­tory dis­plays on vary­ing sub­jects and the Dis­cov­ery Day will end with a “Bonus Ques­tion and Answer Hour” start­ing at 1 p.m. In­struc­tors will be there to answer any ques­tions you have about Fam­i­lySe- arch and fam­ily his­tory in gen­eral.
