A READER ASKS

Simple Grace - - Mood Index -

“Dear Lord, my blessings bring me great joy, but there’s always a shadow of guilt hanging over me because I know others are suffering. I get heartsick thinking of all the refugees, persecuted Christians and victims of violence I can’t help. I don’t think You want me to live in sadness. Still, it feels selfish to be happy when others are in such pain. How do I come to terms with this?”

—Paul in his first letter to the Thessalonians, 5:16–18

Wisdom of the Word

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. We understand and yet…

It’s hard to embrace our own happiness in the face of others’ suffering. Do we even have the right to ask You to ease our guilt over the joyful moments we enjoy?
