“Dear Lord, hearing people talk about being ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’ makes me feel like some sort of secondrate worshipper: Truth be told, I’m not sure I’ve ever been filled at all. I’m confident I’ve felt the Holy Spirit work in me when I pray, and guide me when I ask You for help. But when I go to Christian concerts or watch services on T.V. where the pastor invites the Spirit in, people seem to be totally overcome—it’s like they’re lifted to a height that’s closer to You than I’ve ever attained. I’ll admit to being so hungry for that experience that when I’m in the midst of people having it, I’ve tried to act like them, hoping I could kind of fake it till I make it. Not surprisingly, it makes no difference whatsoever; I just end up feeling like a total fraud. Maybe I’m not ready to be filled yet, but can You tell me if I’m doing something wrong?”
