BILL DONAHUE

Contributing Writer

SKI - - BACK STORY -

New England-based writer Donahue, an avid Nordic skier, didn’t hesitate when invited to embed with the U.S. military for cold-weather training north of the Arctic Circle (“Taking Aim at The New Cold War,” page 80). “I live in New Hampshire, in an old house that does not have running water in the winter,” says Donahue. “I heat with wood.” Donahue says that, surprisingly, he was never hungry despite the daily exertion. “The MREs tasted pretty good when I was in the Arctic,” he says. “But when I arrived home with a couple leftover MREs and tried to eat them in the relative comfort and warmth of my home, they were inedible.”
