Best Buy Dumps CDS

Sound & Vision - - PERFECT FOCUS -

The nation’s largest consumer electronics chain has banged another nail into the Compact Disc format’s coffin. Best Buy will no longer sell CDS. Declining sales were blamed. Anonymous sources quoted by Billboard say CD sales accounted for only 0.1 percent of 2016 revenues. However, the chain will continue selling LPS in displays that also include turntables. In related news, Target is changing terms for CD and DVD sales. Instead of paying labels and distributors up front, it will pay for discs only after retail purchase. The biggest CD retailers are Amazon, with 24 percent of the market, and Walmart, with 22 percent. So while you might argue that the CD format is failing, you might also argue that Best Buy and Target have failed to market CDS effectively with paltry, risk-averse selections that pale compared to what’s available online.— MF
