A LIGHTHOUSE FOR RESEARCH

-

On a clear day at Lime Kiln Light on San Juan Island in Washington, you can see the Olympic Mountain range and the shores of Vancouver Island. Named for the lime kilns once used to turn locally quarried limestone into mortar, the light was built in 1919 and guides ships through Haro Strait. In 1985, the lighthouse and surrounding sea were dedicated as a whale sanctuary and research station for marine mammal scientists, who study the movements and behavior of orcas.
