PRCA COMMISSIONER EXPLORES IDEA OF SANCTIONING RODEOS IN MEXICO
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Commissioner Karl Stressman and Mark Knapp, of the PRCA’s rodeo administration department, visited Chihuahua, Mexico, April 17-21 at the invitation of the Governor of the State of Chihuahua and officials of the Chihuahua-based Mexican Rodeo Federation. They were there to discuss the possibility of the PRCA sanctioning some Mexican rodeos.
Stressman and Knapp met with Mexican Rodeo Federation (FMR) President Guillermo “Memo” Herrera and FMR officer Carlos Ochoa to initiate discussions about the concept and the procedures that would come into play to bring the proposal to fruition.
As part of this fact-finding mission, Stressman and Knapp toured local arenas and event locations specific to rodeo and other sports within the state. They attended the FMR-sanctioned Rodeo of Champions April 19 and met a variety of FMR contestants and officials.
Commissioner Stressman was presented with a ceremo- nial belt buckle (pictured) during the grand entry of the rodeo from President Herrera, and Stressman participated in a team roping practice at a local team roping arena during the visit.
The PRCA delegation also met with the State of Chihuahua’s Director of Planning Arturo Estrada Frias and Director of Tourism Ivonne Barriga Marquez to discuss what the state could do to promote the PRCA’s partnership with the FMR in Chihuahua.
Officials of the PRCA and the FMR will be in a continuing dialogue with a goal of having PRCA-sanctioned rodeos throughout Mexico. –Story and Photo Courtesy PRCA
