BUCKLE UP

Spin to Win Rodeo - - At The Barrier - with Patrick Smith, by Chelsea Shaffer

Patrick Smith won the first-ever RFD-TV’s The American and its $100,000 payday in 2014, and despite owning nearly every other major jackpot and rodeo buckle there is, he sticks to this one most of the time.

“I like the old-school look of the buckle,” Smith said. “It’s really small, and it’s what you get used to. If I put a gold buckle on, it feels like a dinner plate until I’m used to it.”

Smith got most of his other big wins with Trevor Brazile (a gold buck- le and the BFI, to name a few) and Clay Tryan (the George Strait and another gold buckle), but he picked up this gem the one year he roped with Georgia’s Kaleb Driggers. (Driggers also won it in 2015 with Travis Graves.)

He was aboard his former AQHA/ PRCA Heel Horse of the Year, Amigo (registered as Sunday Night Bingo), for the win. Amigo is also responsible for Smith’s world title in 2010 with Brazile, as well as their 2013 BFI win.

“When I won the American, I remember telling everyone that even if I wouldn’t have won the rodeo, I’d have said it was the coolest rodeo I’ve ever been to. It’s a fun rodeo, and the name and the prestige keep growing more and more every year.”
