Swiger getting into swing of things
BASEBALL >> A pair of local freshman have found their way to a lot of early playing time at Bloomsburg. Cole Swiger, an Upper Dublin graduate and Souderton alumni Blake Gular have both played plenty for the 21-19 Huskies.
Swiger has played in all 40 games, starting 39 while Gular has played in 25 with 21 starts. An outfielder, Swiger provided a highlight of the season with a two-run walkoff home run against Mansfield on April 9. The Maple Glen product leads Bloomsburg with seven homers, is batting .292 and has driven in 32 runs.
Gular, an infielder, has posted a .254 average with three homeruns, seven doubles and 14 RBI. SOFTBALL >> Immaculata freshman Abby Carter (St. Basil Academy) had an incredible week, batting .700 as the Mighty Macs went 7-1 and as a result was named CSAC Batter of the Week on Monday. Carter, the leadoff hitter, went 21-for-30, scored 11 runs and was a combined 7-for-7 in a doubleheader against Rosemont. For the season, Carter is a scorching .452 with 34 runs scored, 18 RBI and is 8-for-9 stealing bases.
Widener freshman Jamie Gosselin, an Abington grad, was named ECAC and MAC Player of the Week for the week ending April 16. Gosselin hit the first college home run of her career, making it a notable one as it was a walk-off grand slam against Albright. For the season, the freshman is batting .341 with 24 runs and 15 RBI on 30 hits and she has swiped 12 bases in 13 tries.
La Salle junior Angelia Refice (CB West) is hitting .257 with four RBI and 12 runs in 35 games while freshman and William Tennent product Jackie Heim is batting .316 with four RBI and six runs in 18 games, 15 of them starts.
Ursinus freshman Jen Hammons (Springfield Township) has seen time in the pitching circle and at the plate for the Bears. Hammons is batting .333 with three walks, three RBI and just one strikeout in 16 games. In the circle, the freshman has made eight starts and has a 4.80 ERA with 37 strikeouts.
