Orioles edge Yankees to snap seven-game losing skid Indians 5, Athletics 3

-

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles had just ended their longest losing streak in six years, and to mark the occasion they did absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.

After beating the New York Yankees 3-2 Monday to snap a seven-game skid, the Orioles exchanged fist-bumps in an orderly fashion near the mound, shook a few hands and adjourned to the clubhouse.

OK, but there had to be a sense of relief, right?

“No. Not at all,” manager and former Mississippi State player Buck Showalter said.

The slide dropped the Orioles into third place in the AL East behind the divisionleading Yankees and Boston, but Monday’s win reduced the deficit to 3 games.

“I think there’s a confidence in this room we can come back from anything,” reliever Darren O’Day said. “Today was a good start down that path.”

Dylan Bundy allowed two runs over seven innings in another strong start at Camden Yards to help the Orioles get back in the win column after a loss to Toronto and three-game sweeps at the hands of Minnesota and Houston.

“Dylan was really good. That helped a lot,” Showalter said.

CLEVELAND — Carlos Carrasco has held Cleveland’s struggling rotation together through the season’s first two months.

Carrasco (5-2) took a shutout into the seventh in winning his third straight decision and the Indians defeated the Oakland Athletics.

White Sox 5, Red Sox 4

CHICAGO — David Price lasted five innings in his season debut in Boston’s loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Astros 16, Twins 8

MINNEAPOLIS — Once Carlos Beltran and the Houston Astros began battering away, there was no relief for Minnesota’s beleaguered bullpen.

Beltran homered and singled during an 11-run burst in the eighth inning and Houston overwhelmed the Twins in a matchup of AL division leaders.

The Astros won their fifth in a row, improving the best record in the majors.

Interleague Mariners 6, Rockies 5

DENVER — Sam Gaviglio’s experience in the minor leagues helped him get his first win in the majors.

Gaviglio pitched into the sixth inning to get his first career victory, and the Seattle Mariners used six relievers to beat the Colorado Rockies.

He was making his third start and fourth appearance after beginning the year with Triple-A Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League. His time there helped him in the thin air at Colorado.
