EMCC's Scott, Upshaw honored
SCOOBA – For their individual efforts during last week's 49-3 home win over nationally ranked Holmes, East Mississippi Community College's Lindsey Scott Jr. and Duke Upshaw have been respectively picked the MACJC's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
Scott, a freshman quarterback, accounted for 502 yards of total offense and six touchdowns to lead the top-ranked EMCC Lions to last week's victory over then-No. 15 Holmes. The LSU transfer completed 32-of-39 passes for 452 yards and five touchdowns against the Bulldogs, while adding 50 rushing yards and one score on nine attempts.
For the season, Scott currently ranks third among NJCAA statistical leaders in passing yards per game (307.3 yards per game) as well as rating fourth nationally in pass completion percentage (68.7 percent) and passing touchdowns (15).
Upshaw, a sophomore defensive back from Baldwyn, was credited with 10 total tackles, a 29-yard interception return and two pass breakups in the win over Holmes. As a team last week, the Lions limited the Bulldogs to 152 rushing yards – 236 yards under their NJCAA-leading, pergame average heading into the game.
Along with Hinds kick returner DeMichael Harris as the MACJC's Special Teams Player of the Week, EMCC's Scott and Upshaw are now nominated for national awards from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Owners of a 17-game overall winning streak and winners of 28 consecutive regular-season division games, coach Buddy Stephens' 6-0 EMCC Lions will travel to Senatobia Thursday to take on 10th-ranked Northwest Mississippi in a rematch of last year's MACJC state championship game won (38-30) by EMCC. Kickoff for the Top 10 showdown is set for 6:30 p.m. at Ranger Stadium at Bobby Franklin Field.
