Senior night was a success for SHS girls
The smile on Kirsten Thompson's face told the story without her even saying a word.
Thompson participated in volleyball for the first time this season with the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets.
It was a great experience for Thompson. Thompson and two other seniors finished up the regular season for the Lady Jackets on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Murrah High School at the SHS gymnasium.
"It was something new that I wanted to do and I'm really happy I did it," Thompson said. "It was really fun and I enjoyed it."
Thompson wishes she had more time with the Lady Jackets on the volleyball court, and coach Xavian Tillman would like to see her back also along with the other two seniors in Jariyah Covington and Caitlin Beckum..
"This was her first year and she improved by a great amount," Tillman said. "I wish we could keep all three of them and I think we would be pretty good next year. Not saying we won't, but with those three, we wish we could keep them. I was really proud of those girls."
After winning the first two sets over the Lady Mustangs with ease 25-10 and 25-11, Starkville dropped the third set to the visitors from Jackson 25-18.
The Lady Jackets found themselves down in the fourth set early 2-0 and 5-3, but were able to rally to claim a 25-15 victory.
On the backs of those seniors, Starkville ended the regular season on a positive note. The Lady Jackets improved to 1415 overall.
Tillman looked to Thompson, Covington and Beckum for offensive contributions and she knows it's going to be difficult to replace that.
"We're already thinking about who we can put out there to fill those shoes," Tillman said. "They are going to be some big shoes to fill."
Starkville now waits to see if it has done enough to make the playoffs. The Lady Jackets have a Class III, Region 3 record of 3-3 and the point system will determine if they are included in the postseason or not.
Starkville High School senior volleyball players Kirsten Thompson (30), Jariyah Covington (12) and Caitlin Beckum (15) were a part of a 3-1 win over Murrah on Tuesday night at home.
