Don­ald L. Smith

Colonel Don­ald L Smith, USAF Ret, of Le­an­der TX, passed away peace­fully on June 21, 2018 with his fam­ily by his side. Don was born in Stur­gis, MS on April 2, 1933 to Mar­ri­ete M Smith and Het­tie Lee Smith. Don re­ceived a BS de­gree from Mis­sis­sippi State Univer­sity and an MS from the Univer­sity Of North Dakota. Col Smith re­ceived his com­mis­sion in the USAF in 1954. His heroic 23 year ca­reer in­cluded ser­vice in Viet­nam where he re­ceived the Dis­tin­guished Fly­ing Cross among many other awards. He was a nav­i­ga­tor on nu­mer­ous air­craft and a Min­ute­man mis­silier. Af­ter re­tir­ing, Don worked two years as man­ager of Mar­shal Ford Ma­rina and ten years at Texas In­stru­ments. Don was an avid fish­er­man in the TIBass Club and an ac­tive deer hunter. He was pre­ceded in death by his Fa­ther, Mother, brother Robert M Smith, his first wife Diane H Smith and his sec­ond wife Peggy J Smith. Don is sur­vived by his son Lee A Smith and wife Sarah H Smith, daugh­ter Ann E Smith, nephew Steven C Smith, five grand­chil­dren, one great grand­child and his lov­ing com­pan­ion Pat Jo­han­nessen. Visi­ta­tion will be held on July 17 from 6pm to 8pm at Austin Peel and Son Fu­neral Home, 607 East An­der­son Ln, Austin, Texas. A pri­vate fam­ily burial with full mil­i­tary hon­ors will be held the next day at Fort Sam Houston Na­tional Ceme­tery in San An­to­nio, Texas. In lieu of flow­ers, please make a do­na­tion to Fisher House, a char­ity help­ing mil­i­tary fam­i­lies.
