Syd De Soto’s 1956 Panhead

Seeing as how we’re saluting the digger choppers this issue, it’s only right we pull one from the archives to go with. The Magic Pan graced our June 1977 cover, and it’s as fine an example of a showy digger as you’ll find anywhere. From the

long forks to the angular gas tank and all that engraving, Syd De Soto’s Panhead is what a digger showbike was all about back in the 1970s. Based on a 1956 Pan he picked up for $400, Syd kept the changes mild for the first two years then took this machine all the way over the top. Fantasy art is enjoying a resurgence on bikes now, and Debbie Turner worked some real airbrush wizardry, making The Magic Pan live up to its name. SC
