THE KLINGON BATTLECRUISER
Ron Simms’ Sportster-powered starship
“Its ability to draw a crowd of both bike freaks and people who could care less about our sport is unbelievable,” Bob Clark wrote of this Bay Area Custom Cycles’ (BACC) digger when it first appeared in Street Chopper back in the November 1977 issue. When you create a bike that does that, you’ve done something right.
Like the Vader Raider digger, Ron Simms’ Klingon Battlecruiser runs on an Ironhead Sportster mill. Both are fine examples of that style, but that’s where the similarities end. There’s even the whole East Coast/ West Coast rivalry thing going on. JAR Choppers in Bayside, New York, gave the world the black-and- silver Sithed- out Star Wars chopper, while this earlier Klingon version is straight-up Northern California born and bred. Moreover, this Simms chop sports fender-to-neck color unlike its cousin we talked about earlier.
I’d be willing to bet money someone somewhere built an old Battlestar Galactica- themed bike based on that show too. I’m just not sure I want to find it… SC
