On the Road
The first tour of the 2018 United Pacific/ STREET RODDER Road Tour presented by Ford Performance turns out to be one of the most popular of the entire Road Tour summer. The Minnesota Street Rod Association’s Back to the 50’s Weekend in St. Paul has been the place to be in June for many years. More than 12,000 pre-'64 street rods and special-interest vehicles cover the beautiful Minnesota State Fairgrounds for three full days of cruising fun with plenty to see and do for both participants and spectators. The action starts when the gates open on Friday and continues until things wind down on Sunday afternoon.
About five years ago we started to spend the entire week leading up to the Back to the 50’s event right in the St. Paul area. There is plenty to see and do all week and we spend our days visiting rod shops, car collections, and tourist attractions in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area. Each evening we head back to our hotel for an evening of relaxation with fellow rodders.
This year, the fun starts on
Saturday, June 16. We will stop by a vintage motorcycle show in the morning and then have a get-together cookout on Saturday evening. Sunday we will be making the beautiful drive down the Mississippi River to Fountain City and the amazing pedal car, toy, and auto collection of Elmer and Bernadette Duelman. During the week we will make a return trip to French Lake Auto Salvage to see their 100 acres of classic vintage tin. We will stop by Vaughn Veit’s collection to see the new addition that was just completed. The folks at AMSOIL INC. have invited us back up to Superior for a tour of their facility. We have some new surprises in store for the week that will be announced soon. Thursday afternoon we will be special guests at the annual Scavengers kick-off picnic. We again have special parking and a hospitality tent just for the Road Tourians at the fairgrounds all weekend.
Joining us this year at Back to the 50’s will be folks on the Vintage Air Road Tour who are making the trip from San Antonio, Texas, to St. Paul. Rick Love and Jack Chisenhall will be leading the charge from the Lone Star State. Rick has a great week planned with stops at shops including Hot
Rods and Customs of Andice, Texas, Pete and Jakes, Karl Chevrolet, and Harley-Davidson’s final assembly plant in Kansas City. Other stops include Bruce Rick’s car collection in Tulsa and the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. We will all come together in St. Paul on Thursday afternoon at the Scavenger’s picnic and spend the entire weekend together at Back to the 50’s. Please remember that while special-interest vehicles of any year can participate in our tours during the week, only pre-'64 vehicles can get onto the fairgrounds during the weekend event.
For more information on the entire summer schedule see page 113 in this issue, go to streetrodder.com where you will find a registration form, or call the Road Tour Hotline at (800) 664-1362 for the latest updates. I hope to see all of you on a Road Tour this summer.
♦ One of the most popular stops of 2017 was French Lake Auto. More than 100 acres of vintage tin is truly a sight to behold.
♦ Whenever we are in the Twin Cities we are always invited up to AMSOIL INC.’s headquarters in Superior, WI. It is a beautiful three-hour drive north of St. Paul.
♦ The Minnesota State Fairgrounds is wallto-wall pre-'64 special-interest vehicles all weekend at Back to the 50’s. The Minnesota Street Rod Association sure knows how to put on a rod run.
