Rac­ing sea­son nears fin­ish line

Har­ness rac­ing sea­son at Isle Casino Rac­ing Pom­pano Park (777 Isle of Capri Cir­cle, Pom­pano Beach, 954-972-2000, TheIslePom­panoPark.com) is en­ter­ing its fi­nal month of the sea­son. Live races take place on Sun­days and Wed­nes­days with post time of 7:20 p.m.

“Hall of Fame driver Wally Hen­nessey leads the driver stand­ings with 193 wins, far out­dis­tanc­ing Dave In­gra­ham, who is sec­ond with 98 wins,” the track’s John Berry says. “John Mac­Don­ald, Andy San­ter­amo and Rock Plano round out the top five.”

The 20-cent Super Hi-5 wa­ger, con­ducted on the late race of each pro­gram, has a car­ry­over of $2,105.

Fi­nal races will be held May 30. Har­ness rac­ing re­sumes in Oc­to­ber.

In­side the casino, the poker room has added a ta­ble for onecard poker (aka “war”). Min­i­mum bet is $10 and max­i­mum is $5,000. It al­ready had two ta­bles for three-card poker ($5-$500) and three for Ul­ti­mate Texas Hold ’Em ($5-$500).

Re­cent jack­pots on the casino floor in­clude $12,145 won April 18 by “Richard” from Pom­pano Beach on a $1 video poker ma­chine and $16,977 won April 6 by “Jack” from Fort Pierce on a penny Buf­falo slot ma­chine. The casino did not pro­vide the play­ers’ full names.

Fi­nal show­down

The14-day Poker Show­down at Semi­nole Hard Rock Ho­tel and Casino (1 Semi­nole Way, Hol­ly­wood, 800- 937- 0010, Semi­noleHardRock­Hol­ly­wood.com) ended on April 18, with Scott Marg­ere­son win­ning $696,740 in the WPT cham­pi­onship.

The cham­pi­onship guar­an­teed a purse of $3 mil­lion, but it reached $4.2 mil­lion af­ter 1,309 en­tries — the WPT’s fifth big­gest field in its 16 years — bought in at $3,500.

Run­ner-up Faraz Jaka pock­eted $454,496 af­ter three hours of heads-up bat­tling with Marg­ere­son. Six play­ers won at least $140,00, and164 walked with cash.

The next big poker tour­na­ment at the Hard Rock is the Deep Stack Poker Se­ries, which runs May 17-28.

Odds and ends

Yoli Mayor, a semi­fi­nal­ist on “Amer­ica’s Got Ta­lent” in 2017, will sing out­doors at Hialeah Park Rac­ing and Casino (100 E. 32nd Street, 305-885-8000, HialeahPark.com) tonight. The Mi­ami na­tive is nick­named “the Cuban Adele” for her pow­er­ful pop voice. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Ad­mis­sion is free.

Gulf­stream Park Rac­ing and Casino (901 S. Fed­eral High­way, Hallandale Beach, 954-454-7000, Gulf­streamPark. com) has launched a free out­door mu­sic se­ries at its Cham­pi­ons Plaza. On Satur­day, Wayne L will play Latin, disco and golden oldies from 8 to11 p.m. The se­ries goes un­til May 26 with dif­fer­ent acts each week.

The 52nd an­nual $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes will take place on Satur­day at Palm Beach Ken­nel Club (1111 N. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach, 561-683-2222, PBKen­nelClub.com). In Race 12, which should start at about 4 p.m., eight grey­hounds younger than 2 years old will sprint around the 545-yard course. BY’s Wonka, who won all four of his qual­i­fy­ing rounds, is the 1-1 morn­ing line fa­vorite.

I re­cently checked out con­struc­tion of the Back­yard Casino at Calder Casino (21001 NW27th Ave., Mi­ami Gar­dens, 305-625-1311, CalderCasino.com), which should open within weeks. The gam­ing pa­tio will have about 75 games, and smok­ing will be al­lowed. I’ll share more details in an up­com­ing col­umn.
