Racing season nears finish line
Harness racing season at Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park (777 Isle of Capri Circle, Pompano Beach, 954-972-2000, TheIslePompanoPark.com) is entering its final month of the season. Live races take place on Sundays and Wednesdays with post time of 7:20 p.m.
“Hall of Fame driver Wally Hennessey leads the driver standings with 193 wins, far outdistancing Dave Ingraham, who is second with 98 wins,” the track’s John Berry says. “John MacDonald, Andy Santeramo and Rock Plano round out the top five.”
The 20-cent Super Hi-5 wager, conducted on the late race of each program, has a carryover of $2,105.
Final races will be held May 30. Harness racing resumes in October.
Inside the casino, the poker room has added a table for onecard poker (aka “war”). Minimum bet is $10 and maximum is $5,000. It already had two tables for three-card poker ($5-$500) and three for Ultimate Texas Hold ’Em ($5-$500).
Recent jackpots on the casino floor include $12,145 won April 18 by “Richard” from Pompano Beach on a $1 video poker machine and $16,977 won April 6 by “Jack” from Fort Pierce on a penny Buffalo slot machine. The casino did not provide the players’ full names.
The14-day Poker Showdown at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 800- 937- 0010, SeminoleHardRockHollywood.com) ended on April 18, with Scott Margereson winning $696,740 in the WPT championship.
The championship guaranteed a purse of $3 million, but it reached $4.2 million after 1,309 entries — the WPT’s fifth biggest field in its 16 years — bought in at $3,500.
Runner-up Faraz Jaka pocketed $454,496 after three hours of heads-up battling with Margereson. Six players won at least $140,00, and164 walked with cash.
The next big poker tournament at the Hard Rock is the Deep Stack Poker Series, which runs May 17-28.
Odds and ends
Yoli Mayor, a semifinalist on “America’s Got Talent” in 2017, will sing outdoors at Hialeah Park Racing and Casino (100 E. 32nd Street, 305-885-8000, HialeahPark.com) tonight. The Miami native is nicknamed “the Cuban Adele” for her powerful pop voice. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino (901 S. Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, 954-454-7000, GulfstreamPark. com) has launched a free outdoor music series at its Champions Plaza. On Saturday, Wayne L will play Latin, disco and golden oldies from 8 to11 p.m. The series goes until May 26 with different acts each week.
The 52nd annual $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes will take place on Saturday at Palm Beach Kennel Club (1111 N. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach, 561-683-2222, PBKennelClub.com). In Race 12, which should start at about 4 p.m., eight greyhounds younger than 2 years old will sprint around the 545-yard course. BY’s Wonka, who won all four of his qualifying rounds, is the 1-1 morning line favorite.
I recently checked out construction of the Backyard Casino at Calder Casino (21001 NW27th Ave., Miami Gardens, 305-625-1311, CalderCasino.com), which should open within weeks. The gaming patio will have about 75 games, and smoking will be allowed. I’ll share more details in an upcoming column.
