No time for down time this weekend
These are the weekends that try men’s souls. Some (my wife) say it can’t be done. But it can.
SunFest is in full swing, of course, and one of the acts on my must-see list will appear today, when Willie Nelson’s son brings Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real to downtown West Palm Beach 7:15-8:30 p.m. (SunFest.com). Later, if I must let my inner Chewbacca out for a May the Fourth Be With You event, and I may, the Uber will be directed to Churchill’s Pub in Miami for a Ska Wars party featuring Jacuzzi Fuzz, Spred the Dub and, of course, a costume contest (ChurchillsPub.com).
I can’t get too Wookie with it, because Saturday is a big day, with the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, more SunFest, the Kentucky Derby and that Cinco de Mayo thing. Time is tight, so my plan is to track the planes making their artful turns through and over downtown at Rooftop during the lounge’s Kentucky Derby 2:30-7:30 p.m. watch party. For $20, you get a Woodford Reserve cocktail, light bites and the satisfaction of knowing that a portion of the proceeds benefit the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation (Facebook.com/Rooftop1WLO).
After an hour or so of that, I’ll head to SunFest to catch Ice Cube’s 4:45-6 p.m. Saturday set, walk over to E.R. Bradley’s Saloon for the Kentucky Derby, brag about how I had money on Lone Sailor, then catch Rae Sremmurd back at SunFest at 9 p.m. (SunFest.com).
This will leave us perfectly positioned to stroll up Clematis to Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila Bar, where Rocco Mangel will have his annual Cinco de MayoBlock Party until 2 a.m. Similar parties ensue at his places in Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale (RoccosTacos.com).
With an efficient Uber, the nightcap will be the Cinco WuMayo show at Cash Only in Fort Lauderdale, highlighted by a late-night performance by the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah (Facebook.com/ CashOnlyFTL).
If I can get up in time on Sunday, the weekend feels like it would not be complete without Sublime With Rome, 2:30-4 p.m. at SunFest (SunFest.com). My 12-year-old daughter also has expressed interest in DNCE (the other Jonas) at 2:45 p.m. What’s a responsible father to do? Wait, what’s a responsible father? Tower. Hi, kids! Visit Tap42.com.
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real play SunFest in West Palm Beach tonight.
