Galactic

Sun Sentinel Broward Edition - Showtime - South Broward - - MUSIC -

Over the past several years, the cosmic grooves of jazz-funk explorers Galactic have lured an impressive number of collaborators into their orbit: Macy Gray, Mavis Staples, Mystikal and Trombone Shorty. All four throw down the funk on the New Orleans sextet’s 2015 album “Into the Deep,” none perhaps more soulfully than Staples, who loans vocals to Galactic’s pulsating single “Does It Really Make a Difference.” “She just killed it,” saxophonist Ben Ellman told NPR last year, recalling their recording sessions with Staples. “We’re big fans of, like, the Meters and Booker T. & the MG’s and these bands that have worked as sort of the backing band for various vocalists. And that has kind of been our model.” Galactic’s other model, of course, has been 20 years of persistent touring on the jam-band scene, along with paying tribute to blues and jazz greats (John Lee Hooker, Rebirth Jazz Band) with live covers.
