The 2016 edi­tion of this an­nual con­gre­ga­tion of R&B stars took a hit this week with Aretha Franklin can­cel­ing her per­for­mance, but the show will go on with a lineup that stacks up with the strong­est in its 11-year his­tory. Eleven-time Grammy nom­i­nee Char­lie Wil­son will step in for Franklin in head­lin­ing Satur­day per­for­mances that in­clude Kool and the Gang, Michael McDon­ald, the Av­er­age White Band, Na­jee, Regina Belle and Alex Bugnon. Sun­day brings eight-time Grammy-win­ning song-and-dance man Usher, pop provo­ca­teur Janelle Monae, Ken­neth “Baby­face” Ed­monds, Brian Cul­bert­son and Fred Ham­mond. Co­me­dian Rickey Smi­ley will host the fes­tiv­i­ties, which in­clude food, drink, lo­cal artists and an open­ing-night party on Fri­day.
