Residents to support healthier infants at ‘March for Babies Broward’
Lace up your sneakers and join the March of Dimes annual “March for Babies Broward” May 4 at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Davie. More than 7,500 Broward residents and business leaders will join forces for the 3-mile stroll.
Each year in Florida, one out of nine babies are born premature. By raising awareness and funds through the March of Dimes’ largest fundraising event, “March for Babies,” supporters help improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Money raised by the Broward division supports programs in our community to help mothers have healthy, full-term pregnancies and fund research.
This year the March of Dimes celebrates its 75th anniversary. The organization is taking time to acknowledge how the nonprofit has changed the fabric of families, babies and the nation. Its annual “March for Babies” is held in 900 communities across the U.S. and involves more than 7 million people each year. The Broward division expects to raise more than $1 million from hundreds of corporate and family teams along with thousands of individuals who want to make a difference.
“The March of Dimes has been instrumental in giving babies in our community and around the country a healthy start,” said Dr. Irv Rosenbaum, event chairman. “Our achievements over the past 75 years would not be possible without teams of walkers who support the mission of March of Dimes.”
Walkers can sign up as individuals or create a corporate or family/friends team online or bring a donation (suggested $200) to the registration tent on race day. Registration opens at 7 a.m. with the walk kicking off at 8:30 a.m. Music, food, fun and family activities will continue until noon in the March for Babies Village. Complimentary parking is available adjacent to the March for Babies Village next to the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center on the NSU campus. The campus is located at 3301 College Drive, Davie.
“March for Babies Broward” is sponsored by Broward Health, Cross Country Home Services, Healthcare Performance Anesco, Memorial Healthcare System, Sunshine State Health Plan and SFL-TV; top corporate partner Publix Super Markets Inc.; and national sponsors include Kmart, Farmers Insurance, Macy’s, CIGNA, Famous Footwear, Sanofi Pasteur, Mission Pharmacal, Actavis and United Airlines.
