John Of­fer­dahl’s ‘Broward Health Grid­iron Grill-Off’ pits for­mer ath­letes against top chefs

Twenty-five Mi­ami Dol­phins le­gends will team up with top South Florida chefs for John Of­fer­dahl’s “Broward Health Grid­iron Grill-Off Food, Wine & Tail­gate Fes­ti­val” Nov. 9, from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Pom­pano Beach Am­phithe­ater, 1806 N.E. 6th St., Pom­pano Beach.

The Grand Grill-Off ticket will al­low at­ten­dees 21 and older to watch celebrity teams cre­ate win­ning sig­na­ture dishes. It will be a food lover’s event; past menu items in­cluded #69 Sims’ BBQ Sword­fish, #25 Oliver’s sea scal­lops wrapped with pro­sciutto and New York strip steak, #85 “Su­per Duper’s” skirt steak, #23 Strad­ford’s pork belly let­tuce wraps, #40 An­der­son’s grilled lob­ster roll and #91 Cross’s mahi mahi ta­cos, to be paired with a se­lec­tion of Ken­dall-Jack­son wines.

Guests will sam­ple sim­i­lar dishes, plus look on as for­mer Mi­ami Dol­phin Troy Strad­ford teams up with Chef Greg McGowan of Pel­i­can Land­ing at Hy­att Re­gency Pier Sixty-Six to de­fend their ti­tle as win­ners of last year’s com­pe­ti­tion. Other fa­vorite Dol­phins le­gends in­clude Zach Thomas and Joe Rose. Pop­u­lar restau­rants in­clude Coun­cil Oak Steaks & Seafood at Semi­nole Hard Rock Ho­tel & Casino and Palme d’Or at The Bilt­more.

Event pro­ceeds will ben­e­fit Of­fer­dahl’s Hand-Off Foun­da­tion, which di­rects funds to agen­cies that “feed the needs of kids in cri­sis” in­clud­ing 4KIDS of South Florida, HOPE South Florida, Here’s Help, Florida Restau­rant & Lodg­ing As­so­ci­a­tion and the Mi­ami Dol­phins Foun­da­tion.

“I am ab­so­lutely over­whelmed with the cal­iber of ta­lented ath­letes and chefs signed on to par­tic­i­pate in this year’s com­pe­ti­tion,” said Of­fer­dahl, event founder and for­mer Mi­ami Dol­phins all-pro line­backer. “It has been four years since I cre­ated this unique char­i­ta­ble event to help feed the needs of kids in cri­sis, and I con­tinue to ap­pre­ci­ate the un­wa­ver­ing sup­port of the lo­cal com­mu­nity.”

Adding to the ex­cite­ment will be South Florida’s first “EGGfest” pre­sented by Smith­field Food­ser­vice. It will fea­ture Big Green Egg en­thu­si­asts from across the coun­try, look­ing to show off their skills on the iconic out­door grill. A $25 ad­mis­sion fee gives “EGGfest” at­ten­dees the chance to en­joy food sam­ples, plus all of the other great fun and en­ter­tain­ment as part of the Tail­gate Zone.

Oth­ers will en­joy the Jack Daniel’s Ten­nessee Honey Tail­gate Zone, which will en­gage foot­ball fans with a spir­ited corn hole and bean­bag com­pe­ti­tion. Guests of this free ad­mis­sion part of the event can view cur­rent Univer­sity of Florida, Florida State Univer­sity and Univer­sity of Mi­ami foot­ball games at the Bud­weiser Build-a-Bar.

The day’s fes­tiv­i­ties will cul­mi­nate in a live con­cert, fea­tur­ing four-time Academy of Coun­try Mu­sic nom­i­nee Lee Brice, per­form­ing his lat­est sin­gle “Park­ing Lot Party” among other pop­u­lar hits, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Prices start at $20 each, and can be pur­chased as part of a combo with the Grand Grill-Off ticket for $89.

Tick­ets for the “Grand Grill-Off” are $75 each (age 21+), “EGGfest” tick­ets cost $25 each and the “Jack Daniel’s Ten­nessee Honey Tail­gate Zone” is free and open to the pub­lic.
